Photograph collection, [ca. 1940-1960].

A total of 147 black and white photographs spanning the 1940s and 1950s, comprised of two groups: one of 113 items that appear to be from the National Maritime Union proper, and another group of 34 shot by photographer Ernst Haas, for the United States Economic Cooperation Administration (ECA), the administrative arm of the Marshall Plan. The NMU photographs include excellent shots of a hiring hall "shape-up", ca. 1950s, the NMU's sixth convention, shots of some NMU leaders (including Joseph Curran) of a "Safety At Sea" exhibit, and of "Maritime Day 1944", a celebration that included black, white, and Hispanic members and their families, and celebrities and politicians (including Fiorello La Guardia) addressing the crowd. The ECA images are striking photographs taken in post-WWII France (probably Marseilles) of black (possibly African) and white merchant seamen and dockworkers and their families.

147 photographs.
